Bacardi has been able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its global operations by 50%, ahead of its set target of December 2017.

This 50% reduction in emissions in global operations is equal to taking 15,000 cars off the road every year .

Bacardi began this initiative in 2006, and since then, the firm has taken up several measures at its distilleries, bottling facilties and offices across the world.

"We’re working towards a net-zero impact throughout the entire value chain."

Since 2006, the firm has also boosted its water use efficiency by almost 50%.

Under the measures, the firm has installed wind turbines and heat recovery systems and also developed biomass boilers at its distilleries in Scotland and Mexico.

In Scotland, it developed an energy-efficient blending and shipping centre for its two whisky brands, which is leading to a reduction in emissions across its production and transportation operations.

Similarly, in Italy, the company has set up hydropower and cut down its dependency on fossil fuel for its production operations. Botanical discards are beig converted into fertiliser.

Bacardi global operations senior vice-president Jean-Marc Lambert was quoted by royalgazette.com as saying: “We’re not stopping here, we’re working towards a net-zero impact throughout the entire value chain in the production of our world-class brands.

“Our goal is to return to the environment at least as much as we take away.”
