Chivas Brothers, a Scotch whisky and gin brand of Pernod Ricard, has plans to invest £40m in a new distillery at its Kilmalid site in Dumbarton, the UK.

The new project will include a bottling hall and offices. It is expected to open by 2019.

This move comes after a review of the brand's current operations, reported thedrinksbusiness.com.

"This £40 million investment will enhance and improve our operations and support the development of our global and iconic brands."

The brand plans to begin shifting the operations from the existing Paisley location from 2018 to the Kilmalid site, and to complete this move by the end of 2019.

Chivas Brothers chairman and chief executive officer Laurent Lacassagne was quoted by whiskyintelligence.com as saying: “Our proposal is the next step towards achieving our leadership ambition and is a clear signal that we see a strong future ahead for both the industry and our business.

"This £40 million investment will enhance and improve our operations and support the development of our global and iconic brands. This is a project of significant size and scale for Chivas Brothers which is why which we are announcing our proposal three years in advance.

"We want to provide ample opportunity to manage the transition of our business effectively and for our employees to adjust and adapt to working from a new site.”

Chivas Brothers’ portfolio comprises Scotch global whisky brands including Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s, The Glenlivet, and Royal Salute; single malts including Aberlour, Longmorn, Scapa, Strathisla and Tormore; and English gin brands comprising Beefeater and Plymouth gin.

Chivas Brothers opened a £25m facility at Dalmunach last July. This distillery generates up to 10 million litres per year.
