Scottish distillery GlenWyvis has reached its crowd funding target of a £1.5m, which will be used for constructing a malt distillery near Dingwall.

The funding scheme was launched in April through crowdfunder.co.uk.

The distillery achieved its target two days before the scheduled deadline.

"Over 15,000 shareholders acquired shares in the distillery."

Shares in the company were available from £250.

Over 15,000 shareholders acquired shares in the distillery, with some coming from countries including Brazil and Australia, reported the Telegraph.

Once the construction of the distillery is completed, which is expected in 2021, it will become the first community-owned distillery in the world, reported thespiritsbusiness.com.

It will also have an annual production capacity of up to 200,000l. Initially, the distillery will have a production capacity of 30,000l.

Ninety years ago, two distilleries, Ferintosh and Glenskiach, were closed in Dignwall. The opening of the GlenWyvisIt distillery will mark the return of a Scotch whiskey distillery in the area.
