US-based dairy company HP Hood has issued a voluntary recall of certain code dates of protein drinks produced at its Sacramento, California facility, due to the potential for premature product spoilage.

The company has ordered a recall due to a packaging defect that may result in product spoilage during transit and handling.

The firm stated that consumers may find in some cases that the packaging is bloated and products inside may have an off taste or odour. It has urged consumers not to use the products since they do not meet quality standards.

"These products carry best by dates of 21 November 2016 through to 23 May 2017, with an ‘HS’ in the code date."

The recalled products are limited to plastic bottles of 14oz and 10oz Muscle Milk Genuine, Muscle Milk Pro Series, Muscle Milk 100 Calorie.

These products carry best by dates of 21 November 2016 through to 23 May 2017, with an ‘HS’ in the code date.

The company has so far not received complaints of any consumer illness or injuries.

It has urged consumers to return the products to the store where they were purchased for an exchange.

This recall has been initiated as a precautionary measure and the firm has notified the US Food and Drug Administration.
