Sea Smoke has acquired 201ac of Rita’s Crown Vineyard in Santa Barbara County, California, from Santa Colina Vineyard for an undisclosed amount.

Rita’s Crown Vineyard features 61ac of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines, which were planted in 2007.

Atlas Vineyard Management will farm Rita’s Crown Vineyard for Sea Smoke.

"The acquisition of Rita’s Crown reflects our commitment to our neighborhood’s long-term reputation."

Additionally,  it will be responsible for the sale of the vineyard’s grapes to various wineries.

Rita's Crown will not become part of Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard, which is located nearby, nor will its grapes be used in the making of wines of Sea Smoke Estate.

Sea Smoke vice-president and director of winemaking and general manager Victor Gallegos was quoted by winebusiness.com as saying: “The acquisition of Rita’s Crown reflects our commitment to our neighborhood’s long-term reputation.

“Because Rita’s Crown is already a source for top vineyard-designate wines made by Babcock, Ken Brown and Sandhi, this purchase adds a turnkey business to our portfolio.

"It also expands our ability to preserve our area’s reputation for exceptional wines by immediately transitioning Rita’s Crown to organic farming, which will also strengthen the ecological health of our neighborhood.”

Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard is being completely farmed organically and biodynamically.

It is expected to secure its organic and biodynamic certifications this year.
