Applied Food Sciences (AFS), a US-based developer and marketer of foods, beverages and nutritional supplements technologies, has received a patent from the European Patent Office (EPO) for a method to enhance post-processing content of beneficial compounds in beverages.

A similar technology has been applied by AFS and its licensees in the US for the last few years under the trademark name HealthyRoast.

The grant of patent from EPO allows the American coffee company to introduce the new roasting technology to various coffee roasters in Europe.

Polyphenols are a natural source of antioxidants found in unroasted (green) coffee beans and they are eliminated due to high temperature used during the coffee roasting process.

AFS marketing vice president Jackson Zapp said the HealthyRoast technology helps in retaining the polyphenols and the end products are equal to the quality and flavour of the premium gourmet coffee produced through tradition roasting methods.

European Coffee roasters can use the patented roasting technology by obtaining license from AFS.

HealthyRoast method can be incorporated into existing roasting process at minimum investment, claims the company.

The implementation of the new technology will help in boosting general functional and nutritional beverage offerings, and the technology, along with coffee, can be useful in preserving polyphenols in other beverages.

AFS owns roasted organic coffee brand Caffe Sanora, which is produced by using the HealthyRoast technology.

The company also focuses in development of technology for useful ingredients such as Calcium D-Glucarate and GCA green coffee extract.
