Burger King, a fast food hamburger chain, has been given the permission by Lambeth Council in London to serve beer at its store near Waterloo Station.

It will be the first fast food chain in the UK to offer alcohol.

Earlier, Westminster and Paddington Borough councils had rejected such proposals from the chain to serve alcohol at its Victoria and Paddington station branches.

The chain wanted to serve beer seven days a week, but the proposal was struck down as it was strongly opposed by the local police.

Burger King got an approval from Lambeth Council to serve alcohol at the Waterloo branch from 11am to 8pm.

The beer must be served in plastic containers along with the food and the drink ought to be consumed within the premises.

The beer itself should not be stronger than 5% ABV.

The council also imposed additional rules as per which Burger King will have to provide better staff training, focus on record keeping, have better CCTV, and increase management supervision.

Burger King spokeswoman as quoted by Thedrinksbusiness.com as saying: "It’s very successful everywhere else so we’re just catching up with the rest of the world really."

She also added: "It’ll probably be an American beer to fall in line with the brand."
